In Sue Grafton’s book “ ‘A’ is for Alibi”, Nikki the mother of a deaf son and a woman prosecuted with murder, tries to be proven innocent with the help of an investigator Kinsey Millhone. When the deaf son Colin starts to be questioned, its brilliant the way Sue Grafton adds this suspense into the turning point of the story.
Kinsey MIllhone comes over to Nikki’s house after getting home from investigating in LA. Colin is going through a photo album while Kinsey and Nikki talk about the murder investigation. In this album Colin comes across a photo in which he keeps exclaiming that his dad Laurence’s ex spouse is his Nana. But when Nikki mentions that his Nana died when he was one, how could it be possible that he remembers her?
Kinsey finds this very odd. So after she thinks about this incident for a few days she went back to NIkki’s house and had her ask Colin some questions. At first Nikki wouldn’t cooperate, until she knew that to be proven innocent she would have to. Colin was very shy around Kinsey, but once Nikki told him everything would be okay Colin lightened up.
